Settling a negative balance

This article outlines the steps to settle a negative balance in your Binance.US account

In the event you attempt a deposit that can not be fulfilled by our payment If a deposit attempt cannot be completed by our payment processor, you may need to submit a new deposit to cover any resulting negative balance.

Negative balances most commonly occur due to insufficient funds, reversed deposits, or a closed bank account.

Your account may show a negative balance if you've already spent or traded funds from a deposit that ultimately fails. This happens because Binance.US pre-credits your account so you can begin trading right away. The actual deposit is then settled with your bank within 2–7 business days through our payment processor.

Note: ACH Deposits can only be withdrawn in USD or Crypto after 7 days. Learn more here.

Why do I have a negative balance?

You might see a negative balance in your account if a recent USD deposit or purchase order was unsuccessful. Here's why this happens:

At Binance.US, we want you to be able to start trading quickly. To make this possible, we often pre-credit your account with the funds from your deposit or purchase before we receive confirmation from your bank. This allows you to take advantage of trading opportunities instantly.

However, if we're unable to process the transaction with your bank for any reason after we've pre-credited your account, the pre-credited amount will result in a negative balance. This negative balance represents the funds that were initially made available to you for trading but were not successfully collected from your bank.

In simple terms: We gave you access to funds early so you could trade, but now we haven't received those funds from your bank. The negative balance indicates the amount still owed to Binance.US.

Negative balances may result in asset liquidation in as little as 48 hours. To avoid this, we strongly recommend settling negative balance immediately.

I have a negative balance but there is a charge on my bank statement

Often, when a deposit or purchase is initially attempted, your bank will show it as a pending transaction. This means the funds haven't fully cleared yet. While the charge might appear on your statement, it doesn't necessarily mean the transaction was successful.

Pending charges can take 1 to 5 business days to be finalized by your bank. If the transaction has failed on their end, the pending charge will eventually disappear from your statement.
