Two factor authentication (2FA) FAQs

This article answers frequently asked questions related to two-factor authentication.

Updated this week

Binance.US requires all of our customers to implement at least one method of two-factor authentication (2FA) for their accounts. Two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security to help protect your funds and sensitive information.

If you need to reset your 2FA device, learn how to do so here.

I only see Google Authenticator as an app choice, can I use other apps?

Yes. Even though we recommend Google Authenticator, the majority of two-factor authentication applications that utilize 6-digit TOTP (time-based one-time passwords) will work in Google Authenticator's place. The application must also use a 16-digit key to bind accounts (which is standard for most two-factor authentication applications).

In this case, you will still need to select "Google Authenticator" as your chosen two-factor authentication method when given the option.

Although we recommend Google Authenticator, here are some popular alternatives that also support 6-digit TOTP codes:

  • Authy

  • Okta Verify

  • Microsoft Authenticator

  • Duo

  • LastPass

  • 2FA Authenticator App (2FAS) (iOS only)

In each of these cases, the instructions in the above guide should also apply or be suitable for these apps. If you find that the instructions above do not apply, we recommend consulting your authentication app's help guide or confirming that the app in question supports 6-digit TOTP codes.

Why isn't my SMS authentication working abroad?

Binance.US supports operations solely within the United States and its supported territories. If you are located outside these areas, SMS authentication will not function. Ensure you are accessing Binance.US from within supported regions for proper functionality.

What if I don't receive an SMS code?

If you're unable to receive an SMS authentication code, please try the following:

  • Make sure that you are in a location with a strong cellphone signal/Wi-Fi. Try toggling airplane mode on and off to reset your network connection.

  • Close anti-virus software and/or firewall applications on your cellphone.

  • Restart your cellphone and try again.

  • Clear your browser cache or try logging in through incognito mode.

  • Check your spam or junk SMS folders. On an iPhone, open Messages, tap 'Filters,' and select 'Unknown Senders.' Ensure the "Filter Unknown Senders" option in Settings > Messages is activated.

  • Verify your registered phone number is correct in your account settings. If you still cannot receive your SMS authentication code, you can attempt to reset your two-factor authentication method.

What if my Authenticator app code isn't working?

If your Authenticator code for Binance.US is not working, please try the following:

  • For iOS: Go to Settings > General > Date & Time > Toggle "Set Automatically."

  • For Android: Go to Settings > System > Date & Time > Toggle "Automatic date & time" and "Automatic time zone."

  • Restart your cellphone and try again.

If you still cannot receive your Authenticator code, you can attempt to reset your two-factor authentication method.

If you're using another authentication app and having trouble, we recommend consulting your authentication app's help guide, or, confirming that the app in question supports 6-digit TOTP codes.

My attempt to reset my two-factor authentication failed or was delayed

If your attempt to reset a two-factor authentication method fails, please try the following:

  • Ensure you verified the email sent by Binance.US. If you do not see the email, check your Junk or Spam folders, and make sure you have whitelisted Binance.US emails.

  • Check that the information and identity document submitted match the information and identity document you submitted when registering with Binance.US.

  • If you are using a different device or are in a different timezone or location than normal, this may have caused the attempt to fail for security purposes.

Additionally, if your account becomes temporarily locked due to multiple incorrect login attempts, you should wait for 2 hours before trying again. Clear your browser cache, switch to incognito mode, and attempt the process again. If issues persist with an outdated registered phone number, you can use your email to access your account and reset 2FA.

Why do I need two-factor authentication?

Binance.US requires all of our users to implement at least one method of two-factor authentication for their accounts. Two-factor authentication adds an additional layer of security to your account.

Instead of merely needing access to your password, a hacker or unauthorized individual would also need to access your device and receive the temporary code before its expiry to gain unauthorized access and withdraw funds. This makes gaining unauthorized access much more difficult and helps to keep your funds and private information safe.
